EPISODE 27
Circular Economy in Mining with Saleem Ali
Duration - 41 mins
 SHARE EPISODE

Have you ever heard of 3M? Did you know it started off as a mining venture in 1902? It used to be called Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. Over the last 100 or so years, it has evolved into a materials company that makes all sorts of different products.

The prevailing opinion seems to be that mining companies should only focus on mining as a means of creating value - we like miners to be miners and nothing else. But what if mining companies were more than just miners? What if they recycled metals rather than just mining them. What if they helped design and manufacture products that used metals as a raw material. Would this make them more sustainable?

Our guest this week is Saleem Ali from the University of Delaware. His research focuses on how natural resources could be developed more sustainably from an ecological, economical and social perspective.
