EPISODE 34
In a League of Her Own with Kathy Ehrig
Duration - 53 mins

Companies are often good at devising career paths for executives and managers - it seems to be part of the DNA for most. It is rarer  to find companies that have established career paths for technical experts. If we are being honest, our industry has a pretty poor recent record of retaining technical experts. Are companies failings experts here because of the lack of career pathways? Or are experts not delivering what companies are looking for - leading them to be seen as superfluous to the organisation?

Kathy Ehrig started her career at WMC as a Research Geologist at Olympic Dam, working with metallurgists, engineers and production staff to better understand the metallurgy of that deposit - an area we would call Geometallurgy now. 28 years later, and she is still working on unravelling the secrets of Olympic Dam as part of multi-disciplinary technical teams. Even though it has become harder to remain in purely technicals roles in our industry for a long time, Kathy has managed to do so for nearly 3 decades. In this episode, we find out what lessons she has learned along the way and what has been the secret to her success.
